Today, is my best friend's birthday! And really, the day she was born was the day that started it all...
I spent the first 7 years of my life as a lonely, only child, and I had been praying for a sister ever since I understood the concept of having siblings. Amy's arrival in the summer of 1990, while an complete surprise to my parents, was no surprise to me at all. I KNEW in my soul that she would show up, and that she would be awesome. Almost everyone in our family thought she would be a boy, but I knew the truth. I am pretty sure that God made her just for me. I mean, and for the rest of the world too, but mostly for me.
We were buddies from the moment she got here. She did annoying little sister things like follow me around and take my stuff, and I did annoying big sister things like dress her up and show off her cuteness. It was great. It was everything I ever wanted.
People comment on our relationship and how close we are a lot, especially because of our seven year age gap. However, I think that's actually why we're so close. We were never in competition with each other as sisters often are, because we were always in different stages of life. This meant that we could just be each other's cheerleader, and support each other completely.
It's the most amazing thing, to have a person that you can just be your actual, weird self around, with no judgement. It's also pretty great when they are also a part of your family, so you get to spend all the important moments in life with them. Plus, they understand about your family, because they're also aboard that same crazy train.
I'm completely convinced that we share some sort of unexplained psychic connection. Things like this don't happen with all siblings, so this is how I know we have a super special bond. We'll show up at the same place, at the same time, without planning it. One year, even though we lived 2000 miles apart, we bought the exact same swimsuit. We've bought each other the same Christmas gifts on more than one occasion. Sometimes, we even show up to work in the same outfit. It's crazy cool.
Of all the great things that make our relationship so special, I have to say that my favorite thing, is what we've been able to build together. What started as a little, crazy idea, has grown into multiple businesses, this blog, all kinds of outreach opportunities, and our underlying drive for it all, to keep empowering and uplifting other women. We know how valuable it is to have each other, and we also know that not everybody is as lucky as we are. For that reason, everything we do in our businesses and community is in an effort to open our arms and invite other women to join our tribe.
I will be forever grateful that Amy supported my crazy idea to open a bridal shop all those years ago. Women can do some really amazing things when we support each other.
We've expanded our family, to include some truly remarkable people, who all believe in us and share our vision. We couldn't do what we do without all of them. What started as our leap of faith has grown into something more beautiful than I could have ever imagined.
Happy birthday to my beautiful, smart, funny, ambitious, and kind sister. You light up every room you enter, and your birthday is one of my favorite days, because that's when my life truly began. I can't wait to see where we go from here, and what new things we get to accomplish. I know that with you by my side, we can conquer anything.
